Agriculture : Food security

Agriculture : We support the Batwa planting and harvesting crops to feed their children. In Burundi more than 80% of the population lives of farming and the remaining percentage live of the services their offer in public or private sectors. Many batwa die of hunger for lack of food because they have no arable land and therefore get no harvest. This makes them suffer from many diseases related to malnutrition. Remember that our country Burundi is one of the poorest countries in the world, ranking 184th out of 188 countries in the 2016 human development index. More than 65 percent of the population lives in poverty. Burundi has the highest hunger score and is the 9th food security crisis in the world, sharing similar levels with Somalia, according to the 2018 World Food Security Report. More than 50% of the population is chronically food insecure in a country where the total annual production of food would only cover for 55 days per person per year (FAO, Dec2017). ASSEJEBA, thanks to the help of its partners, helps the Batwa find arable lands, get a shelter, selected seeds, and chemical fertilizer so they can grow and harvest crops and thus fight against hunger in their households. This project is a great help for Batwa children because it reduces dropout rates in schools because if they do not have food, Batwa children drop out of school vey easily. This project started in Kayanza and had a very positive impact on the lives of the Batwa and their children.
