The Identity kits
The lack of civil records prevents many Batwa from claiming their social and political rights. The national identity card and birth certificates are the documents conferring Burundian citizenship. All other documents are distributed to applicants on condition that they bring their national identity cards and birth certificates. Similarly, there are free services for Burundian citizens that cannot be accessed without showing their national identity card.
With the ultimate objective of issuing a national identity card to the Batwa of Burundi and with the financial support of the United States Embassy in Burundi and African Road, ASSEJEBA carried out a study aimed at identifying all cases of people without a national identity card, birth certificate and marriage certificate and to give all these documents to all Batwa living in seven villages.
